Susan Church has served as the Field Education Seminar instructor since 2003 and was appointed Director of Field Education in the Fall of 2005. She is the rector of two Oregon coastal Episcopal congregations, St. Luke’s by the Sea in Waldport and St. Stephen’s in Newport.

A visitor to her office in Newport is immediately struck by the series of shrines that adorn her office wall. She created them the year she turned older than her mother was the year she died. The process was, she says, both grief work and art work—indicative of her interest in art and spirituality. A show of her works was presented by the Newport Visual Arts Center.

Susan has been a pioneer in the establishment of Spanish language ministry. A major change in the fishing industry in Newport in 1992 led to an influx of workers, many of whom were Spanish speaking. Realizing that the community was ill-prepared to engage these changes constructively, she brought together persons from many segments of the town. In that process some began to recognize the need for a Spanish language worshipping community. All of this is a wonderful example of “reading” a community, identifying its needs, and mobilizing the resources of that community in response.
