From the Executive Director and Academic Dean
The Northwest House of Theological Studies—a challenging place for you to explore those profound and often perplexing questions. NHTS—an encouraging place to explore vocation and to enhance skills for leadership in faith communities and society. NHTS—a nurturing place to deepen your own faith and spiritual life.
You will have arrived from different paths—having been nudged (or pushed) on by a little divine prompting. What you have discovered is a quality educational program offered by a fine faculty.
You will experience the instructors as passionate about their disciplines and committed to teaching and learning. You have discovered a setting in which to test vocation—either as lay or ordained ministers.
You have also discovered a center of theological exploration that is located within the cultural context of the Northwest USA. Significant theology always emerges within and for a particular social and historical context; inherited tradition engages current realities. With your colleagues you will consider the general environment of the region and the diverse cultural contexts within that region—and that within the global environment. As theological horizons expand, opportunities for contemplation and conversation allow for personal and communal reflections on these new understandings and perspectives.
I have personally found the House enriching, and I am confident that you too will find this community edifying. The friendships formed and the disciplines learning will nourish and sustain you now and for years to come.
Fred Tiffany, Ph.D.
